The 2030 Water Management Platform in Agriculture addresses water scarcity in Latin America and the Caribbean by developing technologies such as satellite imagery and sensors for environmental demand and water availability in the soil. It utilizes vegetation indices to improve efficiency and irrigation management in informed and efficient systems.

This project aims to strengthen the value chain of iron-rich beans and increase technological adoption through communication strategies and knowledge management. The initiative will benefit 1,200 producers, training 200 technicians, 30 marketers, and consumers to improve food security and sustainability in the region.

Bioprocess reducing the solubility of rhizospheric cadmium.
|
This project proposes a bioprocess based on native fungi to reduce cadmium content in cocoa. The initiative, benefiting 3,150 people directly and 3,000 indirectly, aims to improve living conditions and increase the income of family farmers in Ecuador and Venezuela.

Good quality seed: the basis for good production and better yield in the cultivation of native potatoes and Andean tubers.
|
This project addresses the issue of low yields in native potatoes and Andean tubers in family farming in Bolivia and Colombia. It proposes to improve production through high-quality genetic and phytosanitary seeds, promoting the autonomy of farmers and reducing the use of agrochemicals for more sustainable systems.

Climate change-resilient potatoes.
|
This project addresses climate change vulnerability in the Andean region by introducing new potato varieties resilient to drought. It uses advanced clones identified by CIP, strengthening genetic improvement programs and enhancing communication in the production chain. The initiative will mitigate economic and food risks for small and medium-sized producers, promoting harvest security in adverse climatic conditions.

The Agricultural Research Institute of Chile (INIA) signed agreements with INIA Peru and the Agricultural Innovation Institute of Panama in the framework of international collaboration.

From November 13th to 15th, the XXVII Annual Meeting of the FONTAGRO Board of Directors took place. The FONTAGRO Board of Directors analyzed the results and impacts achieved in the 2022–2023 period. New initiatives for financing were approved, and new officials were appointed.

At the XXVII Annual Meeting, the FONTAGRO Board of Directors agreed to appoint Dr. Carlos Parera, representative of Argentina, as President and Dr. Jorge Juan Ganoza, representative of Peru, as Vice President.
The highest authorities of the Agricultural Research and Innovation Institutes (INIAs) of the 14 member countries participated: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Spain, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. These authorities also lead national policies on the subject and are part of the FONTAGRO Board of Directors.
The representatives of FONTAGRO’s sponsoring institutions present were Mr. Alvaro Flores, representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB); and Mr. Federico Villarreal and Mr. Hugo Chavarria, representing the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

The Natural Resources Research Center of INTA Argentina, through the Climate Change Platform, offers the public a series of videos from the conference cycle “The Agricultural Sector in the face of Climate Change,” a cooperation of the Platform with the “Sustainable Intensification of Livestock Systems with Legumes” project, co-financed by FONTAGRO, PROCISUR, the Ministry for Primary Industries of New Zealand, and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA).

In the article developed within the framework of the project Advancing Towards More Sustainable Rice Cultivation, researchers analyzed how the implementation of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation can be a low-emission and climate-resilient practice.
